My Initial Idea was to create sword, shield and helmet in an environment. I wanted to make assets inspired by Zelda. When I began to analyse how the assets are made in Zelda, the designs are inspired by Tiki or Mayan culture by researching primary references. My idea changed and I started thinking about what I could research in terms of historical context. There are many historical cultures to look for like Vikings, Goths, Saxons, Assyrians, Pharos, Phoenicians, Sassanians, Byzantine and so on. I chose to do Roman and Edo culture. I thought of intermingling both of the cultures to produce unique assets.
I needed to have an insight of in game models to know how the textures look like, if it’s mainly texture or modelled details, for example the shield is designed in a certain pattern style if it’s just extrusion or a flat texture. I need to also compare it with 2D concept drawings, how much minimal are the designs so it wouldn’t be difficult to model keeping it to a certain style. I would have to use secondary research just to keep track on style and to analyse how they have incorporated their designs.
From types of blades, samurai sword designs and helmets. I will combine the design or pattern of the sheath or handle with Roman designs to create a unique sword in stylised, presenting and exploring with the designs and finalise the idea.
